Understanding Percentage Calculations

Questions Answered by This Calculator

  • What is a 20% discount on a $120 retail item?
  • If site traffic goes from 5,000 to 6,500 page views, what is the growth rate?
  • What percentage of questions were correct if a student answered 15 out of 20?

Percentage Calculation Formulas

1. Find Value: X% of Y
Solves for the actual subset number given a total and a ratio.
\( \text{Value} = Y \times \frac{X}{100} \)

2. Find Ratio: X is what % of Y
Calculates what portion of a whole a part constitutes.
\( \text{Ratio} = \frac{X}{Y} \times 100 \)

3. Percentage Change: From X to Y
Estimates the relative difference or variance between a starting point and an ending point.
\( \text{Change \%} = \frac{Y - X}{X} \times 100 \)

4. Apply Rate: Increase/Decrease Y by X%
Calculates final pricing when markups, sales tax, or markdown coupon rates are applied.
\( \text{New Value} = Y \times \left(1 \pm \frac{X}{100}\right) \)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I calculate a discount price manually?

To find a discount price (e.g. 20% off), subtract the discount rate from 100% (leaving 80%), then multiply the result by the original price. For instance, a 20% discount on $50 is \( \$50 \times 0.80 = \$40 \).

What causes a "divided by zero" error in percentage changes?

When computing a percentage change, the base divisor is the initial value (X). If the initial value is 0, the equation attempts to divide by zero, which is mathematically undefined. This calculator safeguards against division by zero by returning 0% when the baseline input is 0.

What is the difference between percent (%) and percentage point (p.p.)?

A percent expresses a relative change or proportion of a value. A percentage point represents the arithmetic difference between two percentage values. For instance, if an interest rate goes from 4% to 5%, it increases by 1 percentage point (arithmetic diff), but grew by 25% (relative growth).
